Located in the center of the city of Hamadan, Ecbatana (Tepe Hegmataneh) is considered to be the largest Iranian archaeological site with an underground city. The plan of this ancient city is round and the area is about 40 hectares. According to Herodotus (c.484 – 425/413 BCE), this city was founded under the reign of Dejoces, founder of the Mede Empire (728-675 BC).
Archaeologists found medieval, Parthians and Achaemenes vestiges in the site.
